History of Chatbot from Past to Present

Abstract

This paper reviews the history of chatbot, tracing their development from early rule-based systems to the generative systems that accompany today's artificial intelligence. We begin by exploring the basic ideas in Alan Turing's and Joseph Weizenbaum's "ELISA," which sparked public interest in human-computer conversation. Then reviewing chatbot evolution over the past decades, we discuss the rise of artificial intelligence, which have led to increased accessibility and focus on natural language processing, and empowered chatbot with richer conversational and personalization capabilities. We examine the diverse applications of chatbot across various sectors, from healthcare and education to entertainment and commerce. We highlight ethical concerns surrounding chatbots, including bias, transparency, and privacy. Finally, we look to the future of chatbot, considering advances in artificial intelligence, and the potential of chatbot.
