The current
laboratory experiments investigated the corrosion resistance of galvanized
steel in artificial seawater (ASW). After the coupons were immersed in ASW for
varying time durations (7 and 14 days) at room temperature, the corrosion rates
based on the weight loss were determined. Following exposure to carbon steel
for 7 and 14 days, corrosion rates were 0.1193mmpy and 0.1373mmpy,
respectively. Methods of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy
Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) Analysis characterized the surface composition of their
corrosion product. The visible corrosion product is hematite and lepidocrocite.
This result allows us to understand the corrosion behavior of galvanized steel
used in the marine environment.
